On 23rd August 2024, the Department of Revenue and Customs signed a contract with New
Zealand’s Data Torque Limited to develop the Bhutan Integrated Taxation System (BITS). BITS
is designed to provide a modern platform that e犀利士
nhances taxpayer services with advanced
features such as real-time data processing, automated tax filing, e-invoicing, and an intuitive,
user-friendly interface. This initiative marks a major milestone in the modernization of Bhutan’s
tax administration, aimed at broadening the taxpayer base, improving service quality, and
strengthening resource mobilization, all crucial to enhancing internal revenue management.
The Nu 1 billion BITS project will be rolled out in three phases over the next five years. The first
phase, focused on the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), will be launched
within the next 12 months. Phase 2, which will introduce non-tax and tax-deducted-at-source
(TDS) components, will follow shortly after, and Phase 3 will complete the system with the
integration of the direct tax component.
